"Self-Talk" is an easy way to model language all day without adding any time to your routine! Kids need to hear and be exposed to thousands of words before they can use language successfully, so the more words they hear and are exposed to the more POTENTIAL they have to use them!

Self-talk is when a parent or caregiver talks about what they are doing using an excited or animated voice. This helps to keep interested and engaged! Lots of times parents automatically use self-talk, but being mindful of it helps you be more consistent. And remember... don't use "baby talk" but do keep your sentences short and simple. It is also a good way to introduce gestures like pointing, shrugging or waving and to pair words and facial expressions! Here are some easy examples:

Shopping:

"Hmmm. What do we need?"

"I like apples."

"I need 3 apples."

"One, two, three apples!"

"I'll put them in the bag."

"I"ll put the apples in the cart."

"I love crunchy apples!"

Sweeping the floor:

"The floor is dirty!"

"I need a broom."

"Broom is for sweeping. Time to sweep."

"Clean up, clean up."

"I made a pile."

"Scoop it up."

"Put in the garbage."

"All done."

"The floor is clean!"

Going on a walk:

"Let's go!"

"It is sunny!"

"I am wearing my coat. It's cold"

"I see a tree. I see a bird."

"What do you see?"

"I hear the wind."

"I walk fast."

Everyday activities can be an easy chance to expose your little one to so much language when you use "Self-Talk"! Let us know how it works for your little ones!
